A pharmacy tech who is able to get passing scores on either of these two exams will then be certified. Take note that you will need to take this exam every two years and you have to take 20 hours of continuing education courses which has to include pharmacy law. The exam given by the PTCB consists of 90 multiple choice questions that you must answer in a set amount of time which is 110 minutes.

Answer: This is a very personal answer and what the interviewer is usually looking for is some sign of dedication to your work. If you say because the money is good that may be an honest answer but a better answer would be your desire to work in a field that pays well and allows you to help people.

3.) If you could choose to be any drug which drug would you choose?

Answer: This is one of the creative type questions. We recommend using this as an oppurtunity to lighten the mood of the interview with a joke or semi-serious answer. How about choosing something that shows your lighthearted nature. Perhaps a drug like Lipitor because everyone could use it in their life.

4.) Have you ever recieved a poor performance report from an employer and what did you do to improve?

Answer: Again this is something personal and don’t just blow this off as your interviewer wants to know if you can take criticism and use it to improve.

5.) What accomplishment as a pharmacy technician are you most proud of?

Answer: If you are just starting out you may not have an answer for this yet but if you have been in the field awhile i would recommend a story about helping a customer understand how to use their medicine. This will show your customer service skills and that you generally care about people.

6.) While you were in school what were your favorite subjects in the pharmacy field?

Answer: If you have had training as a pharmacy technician choose your favorite class as long as it wan’t study hall you should be ok.

7.) Have you ever had to supervise others in any of your previous positions?

Answer: This work history question lets the interviewer know you can supervise others and delegate duties as needed.

8.) How do you prioritize your work assignments?

Answer: This is a great way to show you know how to determine what are important tasks and what is busy work that can be done anytime.

9.) What is the most recient drug product that you have read about and what do you know about its use?

Answer: You should definitely study up on some commone medicines before the interview so you can flash your knowledge on this subject. They won’t expect you to know everything but pick something here you know a lot about as you can bet there will be follow up questions on this drug.

10.) Why do you think you are a great person to fill this position?

Answer: This is usually asked at the end of the interview and is your chance to leave an impression. Let them know hiring you would be a great decision.

Some of the lowest report pay rates are in Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi but these states also have a low cost of living.


One other factor that influences your pay rate as a pharmacy tech is your level of experience. The pay rates we have listed here are based on entry level positions. Pharmacy technincians with 3-6 years experience will earn on average 10 percent more per year. Technicians who have passed their certification exam will earn 10 percent more on top of that. If you have 15 years plus experience you can expect to reach the top end of the salary scale at about $60,000 per year.

If you are thinking of increasing your pharmacy technician salary you may want to take the ptcb exam or take some pharmacy classes. The pharmacy tech exam takes quite a bit of study and preperation but is worth it because those who pass the test earn on average 10 percent more or 1 dollar per hour more. Pharmacy classes might also help if you are thinking of going on to get your degree as a Pharmacist. Our recommendation would be to get started as a pharmacy tech and if you enjoy the work ask your employer to foot the bill of taking some pharmacy classes at your local college.
